Here is this week’s list of blog posts, quotes, recipes, photographs and other tidbits from my favourite corners of the web.

Never shave too much off of yourself to fit into something. You are fine how you are. Sometimes the holes you try to fill just don’t fit. – @CoyoteSings

Peacefic. An interesting idea for the writers out there.

Imitation Pasta and Cheese. After a long hiatus my friend Teresa is back to blogging! Go check out her blog for vegan and vegetarian recipes. This one uses a surprising ingredient to reinvent macaroni and cheese for people who don’t or can’t eat cheese.

An Open Letter to the AGO About Frida Kahlo’s Unibrow. In local news some Torontonians are unhappy with the Art Gallery of Ontario advertising their new Frida Kahlo gallery by encouraging visitors to wear unibrows. I don’t know what I think about it all yet. What are your thoughts?

She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry. I’m rooting for this documentary on the rise of the Women’s Liberation Movement to raise enough money to be made. The western world seems to be forgetting how terrible life was 50-60 years ago for women. Even if you aren’t old enough to remember a society in which help wanted ads were segregated by gender, you had to show a marriage license to get birth control and women weren’t allowed to sign up for a credit card without their husband’s approval your mother or grandmother lived through this. This is not ancient history.

Travelling Colours: Great Salt Lake. Achingly beautiful aerial shots of Utah’s Great Salt Lake.

From How to Overcome Your Biggest Phobia:

A lot of people have phobias. And phobias aren’t just everyday worries—they’re serious, intense fears that sometimes (or often) interfere with day-to-day life….But new research shows that there’s a quick and simple way to temper any type of phobia. All it involves is a certain kind of self-talk.

The Book of Mormon Girl is a funny reminder that childhood influences are not easily forgotten. In it Joanna Brooks tells the story of her Mormon upbringing and how even though she no longer agrees with many of the things she was taught she still deeply appreciates the good it brought into her life.

Joanna, if you ever read this and are visiting the Toronto area this former preacher’s kid would love to meet up for a cup of tea and swap stories with you!

What have you been reading this week?

This was such a great collection. I have several comments! First, I’m excited to say that my local library has the Book of Mormon Girl on their shelves and I have it reserved. I look forward to reading it, although, I have about a dozen books from the library staring me in the face at the moment! I quickly lessened the load after reading about 20-40 ppgs from 3 books and didn’t care for them. I never put much credence in reviews, because many times I don’t agree with them once I have the book in hand. It’s nice that our library system is so accessible, and doesn’t charge for the service of going online, purusing the titles, requesting books, and even searching for books outside the local system and requesting books across the state. All of this at no extra charge. I was GLAD to vote YES for our library’s tax levy renewal!!
Thanks for mentioning the blog! That was a surprise. I’ve made that recipe twice already. It can’t believe how much it tastes like mac ‘n’ cheese! The fun part is knowing you are getting an otherwise picky eater to eat squash and seeing his face and disbelief when he finally discovers what the ‘secret’ ingredient was!
I enjoyed reading the piece on the Women’s Lib movement. I’ve been thinking about this some this week. I watched an episode of the Ellen show on TV this week and she was talking about the Honda (I think?) company in Japan designing a car for ‘females’ that comes in pink ?!! It has a little heart that dots an ‘i’. It just makes you stop and ask….when will women not have to fight for equality. I know that’s a bit of a stretch, since I didn’t include a lot of the details of the story, but it just seemed so ridiculous!!
Frida Kahlo is one of my favorite artists. I applaud the person who wrote that letter to the editor!! I think Frida was a gorgeous woman! She was a STRONG woman in many ways. The article was a nice tribute to her and her individuality. It seems that society prefers that we all fit a certain mold or we are ridiculed. Very frustrating!!
Thanks for the great stories, Lydia!

    • Thank you, Teresa! I loved hearing all of your thoughts.

I think you’ll really like The Book of Mormon Girl. Some of their religious and cultural practices are so different than how you or I grew up but the author does a great job of explaining them humorously without being offending people who still believe what she was taught.

Did your library tax renewal levy pass?

I heard about that Japanese “female” car. What silliness.

Frida Kahlo is one of my favourite artists as well. She really makes you think!
