Top Ten Tuesday: Debut Novels I Enjoyed

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

A photo looking down at a pair of black and white running shoes. The person’s feet (and shoes) are standing on a grey surface where the word “start” has been written in chalk. This is such a fun topic! I had to do a lot of searching online to find enough books I’d read to fit it, so I’m hoping the lists I found online were all accurate.

All of these were good reads, and I’d recommend them to anyone who finds their blurbs interesting. As is typical for me, the links in this post are to the Goodreads pages of the books I include. As isn’t typical for me, I have more than ten answers this time!

1.The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

2.The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

3.Watership Down (Watership Down, #1) by Richard Adams

4. Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

5. Still Alice by Lisa Genova

6. The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison

7. The Martian by Andy Weir

8. Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson

9. The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

10. The Sparrow (The Sparrow, #1) by Mary Doria Russell

11. Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (The Wicked Years, #1) by Gregory Maguire

12. Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist

13. Allegedly by Tiffany D. Jackson

  1. I also enjoyed several of these including Wicked, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, and Watership Down.

It’s less likely for me to like a second novel than I will a debut.

  2. I am so excited to see Watership Down on this list!!! It is my favorite book of all time. I actually didn’t put it on my list this week because I feel like I talk about it too much. LOL. I just love it so much.

  3. Some of these are so well loved/ well know it’s truly impressive they’re debuts!

  4. The Kite Runner made my list too! I love that book.

  5. We have several in common this week — Kite Runner and Martian!

  6. I’ve got quite a few of these on my TBR but The Kite Runner is one that will always stick with me (even though I forgot that it was a debut, lol)! Great list 🙂

  7. Allegedly is so underrated. I loved that book, although I thought the last chapter sort of wrecked the whole narrative, but that’s me. LOL

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

  8. I never read the Time Traveller’s book, but I saw the feature film, and I just remember it being a sad story. Though I feel like today, while I’d still rather read or watch something upbeat, I have come to find there are interesting things that sad stories can impart. Thanks so much for visiting my website today! 🙂

  9. The Kite Runner is a book that has stuck with me for YEARS. I first read it in high school, and I still think about it often.

Let the Right One In was another one of my favorites back in the day (I read it before I started Goodreads, so I didn’t even think about it!). I was obsessed with the movie, but I loved the book so much more.

  10. The Martian is amazing, i want to read Project Hail Mary soon, before the movie comes out

  11. I also really enjoyed The Martian!

  12. Great list! 😀 I didn’t even think of Still Alice. We read that for book club a few years ago. It was a book I wasn’t looking forward to, but I ended up reading it in one sitting and loved it. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  13. I see The Kite Runner on multiple lists and I totally forgot about it myself!

  14. Huh, I’d forgotten that The Martian was Weir’s debut. I enjoyed it, too! If I had remembered, I could have included it on my list, too.

Here’s my TTT for this week. Happy reading!

  15. These are good choices, I’ve read a lot of these, but i didn’t realize they were debuts when i was reading them… I don’t really keep track of debuts, so I made a different list this week.

  16. Good job. Frankenstein was much better than I expected–I’ve seen too many cartoons. Snow Child was wonderful. Thanks for reading my blog today!

  17. The Kite Runner was a book I picked up out of curiosity. I almost DNFed it because I found myself getting so irritated with the characters. I think you could say I rage-read it, and in the end, I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. LOL!

Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier.

  18. I think I put 11 on my list, way to go!!! With some authors, I couldn’t remember their first book and had to try and figure it out. Some books I thought were debuts were not, but it was a great topic.

  19. I didn’t know Wicked was a debut novel

  20. I guess I didn’t go far enough back in my reading history — it didn’t occur to me to include The Sparrow, which is one of my very favorite books! I love that you included The Time Traveler’s Wife and The Snow Child too. Great list!

  21. I loved The Sparrow, that’s a great pick. The Martian is also a really good one. I still need to read Frankenstein, that’s a book I mean to read every year and haven’t gotten to.

  22. The Kite Runner is such a good read and one title I keep meaning to reread. Happy reading! My TTT https://readwithstefani.com/the-10-best-books-i-read-in-the-last-10-years/

  23. I had the Kite Runner on my list as well, Lydia, and almost had Still Alice. Some great titles here, and some I will have to check out.

  24. I really loved The Time Traveler’s Wife. I need to read more from the author.

  25. I loved The Martian as well – and have Frankenstein, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit and Allegedly on my TBR! Great selection of classics and newer releases!

  26. Allegedly is one of my all-time favorite YA debuts. Masterful storytelling.

  27. Ahh, The Sparrow was so good. I kind of want to reread it, but at the same time… am I emoti0nally ready?!

  28. Great list! I didn’t realize that The Bluest Eye was her debut work, although it was absolutely phenomenal. I have The Time Traveler’s Wife on my TBR shelf, and The Kite Runner was one of those books that will probably always haunt me. Talent like that is incredible.

  29. Haha yeah I also had to look up if something was a debut or not.
I wish I had liked Frankenstein more than I did.

  30. The Martian was so good! I remember loving both the movie and the book (of course the book was better but still 😂)
