Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: My “Go To” Movie for a Pick-Me-Up

Something tells me I may not be the only Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge participant to pick this answer, but I have to go with The Princess Bride as my “go to” movie for a pick-me-up.

Prince from The Princess Bride saying "as you wish."

It’s a whimsical fairy tale  that has aged pretty well over the past thirty-three years and doesn’t require the audience to do any heavy thinking.

Antagonist from The Princess Bride saying "inconceivable!"

There are so many quotable pieces of dialogue from it. I will admit to occasionally using them in conversations that are in no way related to fairy tales, magic, finding your one true love, or fighting off Rodents of Unusual Size.

Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride saying "you seem a decent fellow. I hate to kill you."

I mean, where else would a character like Inigo Montoya apologize for trying to kill someone in the middle of a sword fight but still go back to their murderous ways immediately?

This isn’t something I’ve seen repeated quite the same in any other fantasy film. There’s something truly magical about these characters and their quests, noble and otherwise.

Giant from The Princess Bride saying "that's wonderful."

And, yes, the book version is just as much fun if any of you haven’t read it yet and were curious.

Two senior citizens from The Princess Bride saying, "have fun storming the castle!"

  1. Ooh I’ve not yet read/watched The Princess Bride but it’s been on my list for years! I’ve heard so much about it and I’m especially glad to hear that it’s aged well.

  2. It’s a great movie. I love it. 🙂

  3. Sydney Winward

Oh, I love The Princess Bride! Both the book and the movie were great. If you haven’t seen it yet, look up the baby who looks like the inconceivable guy. Gives me a good laugh every time!

  4. Very rarely does a day go by I don’t quote SOMETHING from “The Princess Bride”. From “he’s only almost dead” to “I’m not a witch, I’m your wife” and sending off family members with “Have fun storming the castle!”… and so many other classics. It’s a really awesome movie. Good choice!!

  5. I have never seen the princess bride but it is on my list to!

  6. I love this movie and it always makes me think of my mom. I’d come home from school and she’d be watching it on TV so we’d all sit down and watch it with her. Amusingly enough, I have a feeling, my kids will see this movie in 20 years and tell their kids, “Your grandmother loved this movie.” LO

    My post

  7. One of the greatest movies of all time. It does have some great lines. I used to quote Wesley to my students when he said, “Learn to live with disappointment.”

  8. Okay, another Princess Bride. I’m going to rent it tonight. Good list. Thanks for sharing. Here’s mine. https://www.tenastetler.com/lsrs-wednesdays-blog-challenge-my-go-tobook-or-movie-for-a-pick-me-up/

  9. This is a PERFECT pick-me-up movie. It’s one of the few that I can watch any time.

  10. Great choice, and yes — I’m not at all surprised that it’s a popular one for this prompt.

    My list is here.

  11. I didn’t see the Princess Bride until a couple of years ago when I got dragged to a cinema screening (some kind of anniversary I think!) wish I’d discovered it earlier!

  12. I do love The Princess Bride!! Great pick!

  13. Echo Ishii

It’s a great quotable movie. I’m one of the few people who know the book better than the movie. It was actually a while before I saw the movie.

  14. Oh, dear Westley has had my heart since I was a kid. Good pick, Lydia!

  15. LOVED THIS! The Princess Bride is so much fun. Fabulous choice for a pick-me-up.
Now I’ve got the Westley-love sighs. Siiiiiigh.

  16. Shockingly I’ve never seen it, although I know all the quotes. I’ll have to try it.

  17. I go to Edinburgh & the Highlands of Scotland each year, and each year I watch Sunshine on Leith, which never fails to put a spring in my step!
