The Chef

the chef One of the things I admire about photography is how many different messages a good photographer can share with his or her audience.

Take the knife away and this subject is unremarkable. I could walk past her on the street without giving her a second glance.

In this picture, though, she’s terrifying. I don’t know what she’s cooking in her kitchen, and I sure as hell don’t want to find out.

Are you a fan of photography? If so, what is your favourite picture?

Wow this picture is creepy, and the longer I look at it, the more unsettling it becomes! At first I thought it was just the knife that made it scary, but I also think the way the light is shining on her eyes has something to do with it as well. And that smile doesn’t seem particularly genuine either…..

Anyway, I do like to look at pictures, but I can’t say that I’ve had much opportunity to study photography so I don’t know much about it.

    • Exactly. Her eyes and facial expression felt more menacing the longer I looked at them as well.

Other than an art appreciation class or two in college, I’ve never studied how photographs and paintings are put together. What I like to do with them the most is think about the emotions I feel when I see them.

(That’s part of what you do when figuring out what a book “means,” after all. I figure art can’t be that different from literature when it comes to the tools of interpretation. 🙂 )

I never thought about it that way! It makes sense though, interpreting art in a similar way as books or music even. I guess I’ve never approached art in that way because I don’t have much experience with it and, honestly, I’ve always felt a bit intimidated by the visual arts in general.
