Top Ten Tuesday: Books Set In Places on My Bucket List

Thank you to Rachel @ Sunny Side for submitting this week’s theme!

I only have one setting to talk about this week: Prince Edward Island. It’s somewhere I’ve wanted to visit since I first read the Anne of Green Gables books as a child. You can probably already guess what the first book on this list will be!

Someday I will visit that island, but in the meantime there are so many books set there that I sort of feel like I already know it.

Book cover for Anne of Green Gables (Anne of Green Gables, #1) by L.M. Montgomery. Image on cover shows a simple coloured pencil drawing of Anne sitting down outdoors near an opened wooden door. She’s wearing a plain blue dress and grey sweater and looking down at her lap.

Book cover for The Troop by Nick Cutter. image on cover shows the silhouette of someone standing on top of a hill against a reddish-orange sky, probably just after dusk or just before dawn given how heavy the shadows are.

2. The Troop by Nick Cutter

Book cover for Tango: The Tale of an Island Dog by Eileen Beha. Image on cover shows a photo of shaggy little dog peeking out at the viewer. Behind the dog one can see wooden crab traps stacked up on the pier and, behind the peer, the calm ocean.

Book cover for This Summer Will Be Different by Carley Fortune. Image on cover shows a drawing of two people dancing on red rocks near the ocean at sunset or sunrise.

Book cover for Acadian Legends, Folktale and Songs from Prince Edward Island by George Arsenault. Image on cover shows a painting of several small cottages huddled near the shore. In front of the houses there is a line of fish drying and, in front of them, several boats tied to shore.

5. Acadian Legends, Folktale and Songs from Prince Edward Island by George Arsenault

Book cover for Favourite Recipes of Old Prince Edward Island by Julie Watson. Image on cover shows a table ladened with delicious food like bread, roasted potatoes, and a creamy soup in a white bowl. They are all sitting on a white tablecloth.

6. Favourite Recipes of Old Prince Edward Island by Julie Watson

Book cover for Mi'kmaq Campfire Stories of Prince Edward Island by Julie Pellissier-Lush. Image on cover shows three indigenous people dancing outdoors underneath a partly cloudy sky.

Book cover for Mermaids of Prince Edward Island by Allison Wolvers. Image on cover is a drawing of a redheaded mermaid who is siting with her green tail behind her as she gazes off to the right.

Book cover for Mirrors on which dust has fallen by Jeff Bursey. Image on cover appears to be drawn through the perspective of an old mirror that has been scratched up and is covered in a layer of dust. Everything is hazy and some sections are harder to see due to the scratches. The sene shows light falling through a window into an otherwise empty room. We only see this one corner of the room, however.

Book cover for Black Islanders: Prince Edward Island's Historical Black Community by Jim Hornby. Image on cover shows a black and white drawing of a shirtless black man who has a moustache and is holding his arms up in a boxing formation.

I’m the same! I’ve loved the idea of seeing this place since the 80s ‘Anne’ series. 🙂

  2. Nice list, I hope you get to visit the island one day! The cover of Tango is adorable.

  3. I wouldn’t imagined so many books being set there! Interestingly, though, I DO know a trucking/country song set there — sort of.

“It’s Bud the Spud! from the bright red mud
    Rollin’ down the highway smilin’
The spuds are big on the back of Bud’s rig
    They’re from Prince Edward Island
    They’re from Prince Edward Island!

The cops ‘ave been lookin for the son-of- a- gun
That’s been rippin’ the tar off the 401
They know the name of the truck shines out in the sun
    ‘Green Gables’

“So when you see that big truck a rolling by
Wave your hand or kinda wink your eye.
Cause that’s bud the spud from old PEI
With another big load of potatoes!!!”

My dad was a trucker, so I know a lot of trucking songs….even Canadian ones. XD

  4. I think a lot of us feel the same way about Prince Edward Island.

    Thanks for sharing your #TTT

  5. Prince Edward Island is a dream destination for me (and Anne is on my list this week too!). I’ve made it to Nova Scotia (many years ago), and hope to eventually return and spend more time, including PEI!!

  6. I really hope you get to visit the island one day, Lydia! 😊

  7. I’m so embarrassed to say that I’ve never actually read Anne of Green Gables. I hope you get to visit Prince Edward Island one day!

  8. So, wild guess here–you really, really want to visit PEI!! I hope you get to–soon. I loved the Anne books when I read them as an adult. I never met them as a kid in the 1970s. They must have been out of fashion where I grew up.

  9. Carol @ ReadingLadies

I reread 3 of the Green Gables series last year and it increased my desire to visit!

  10. I’ve read Anne of Green Gables, but none of the others. I will be checking a couple of them out. A friend of mine moved to PEI during the pandemic and my daughter moved to Halifax 3 years ago. Now I make the trip out there each year and spend a few days on the island as well as time with my daughter. I am lucky. It’s beautiful, Lyda.

  11. Lisa @ Captivated Reader

Lovely theme for this week’s TTT post! I want to visit Prince Edward Island too. I’ve heard that Caravan Tours gives tours of the Anne of Green Gables area.

  12. Somehow, I’ve still not read Anne of Green Gables, maybe this year will be the time! Love the sound of This Summer Will Be Different 🙂

  13. These look interesting. I didn’t know that there were so many books based there.

    Have a great weekend!

  14. Great list! I hadn’t realized there were so many fiction books set in Prince Edward Island! (The non-fiction ones don’t surprise me as much.) I hoe you get to visit someday!

  15. Love that you’ve books set in on Prince Edward Island. I love the audiobook of Anne of Green Gables, read by Rachel McAdams!

  16. Mermaids of Prince Edward Island looks beautiful!

  17. I would LOVE to go down east and visit all of the Maritimes.

Here’s my TTT for the week: https://readbakecreate.com/books-set-in-iceland-books-set-in-bucket-list-locations/

  18. I have been wanting to visit PEI since reading the Anne books as well! I didn’t know that The Troop is set there, I have it on hold from my library, hopefully it gets to me soon because now I’m excited to read it.

  19. pei is the dream! i had no idea that carley fortune’s book was set in pei. i’ve seen this book floating around for months now. i’ll have to move it up on my tbr list.

  20. Anne was my favourite series as a child and I revisited it as an adult and loved it just as much! I also wanted to go to PEI.

  21. AOGG and PEI made my list as well. Thanks for sharing this great list.

  22. Tango: The Tale of an Island Dog looks like a sweet read. 💚

  23. I suspect I would be very sad if I ever did actually get to visit Prince Edward Island and I didn’t find Anne of Green Gables there. Or would everyone there be just like Anne?

  24. Veros @ Dark Shelf of Wonders

Despite living in Canada, I haven’t traveled around the country enough and I haven’t been to PEI but I’d love to one day! I still need to read Anne of Green Gables too! And that Mermaids of PEI book also looks cool! 🙂

  25. Although I’ve been to Canada, I’ve never been to PEI. Canada has so many places to see, just like the US does.
