Top Ten Tuesday: Modern Books You Think Will Be Classics In The Future

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Thank you to Veros @ Dark Shelf of Wonders for submitting this topic. It’s something I think about regularly and can’t wait to see how everyone else responds to.

Two pink gerbera flowers are lying on an antique hardcover book that’s also been wrapped in a white lace ribbon. It’s hard to tell which books will become classics. Not every bestseller is actually well written or will continue to affect readers in twenty or fifty years. Likewise, I have no doubt there are some true gems out there that may have had middling to poor sales but will eventually be rediscovered and taught in classrooms all across the world.

Here are some books I think might pass the test of time…but we’ll have to wait to see if I’m right!

1. On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

2. My Brilliant Friend (Neapolitan Novels, #1) by Elena Ferrante

3. Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

4. The Deep by Rivers Solomon

5. Everfair (Everfair, #1) by Nisi Shawl

6. The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

I was not able to come up with a full ten answers this week. Here’s hoping you all were able to do that.

  1. I 100% agree. I think there will be underrated books that don’t have much hype but will end up being classics. There are so many books that it’s difficult to know what will or won’t be a classic. This was such a fun topic. 🙂

  2. Ooh, The Deep. That is a great pick (I love that book so much)! I’ve seen My Brilliant Friend and Between the World and Me on a couple of posts today. They’re both on my TBR and this makes me look forward to giving them a try sooner 🙂 Great picks!

  3. The Deep was excellent. Thanks for sharing!

  4. I’ve only read The Deep but it was very good!

  5. Joanne @ Portobello Book Blog

A good selection Lydia. It’s so hard to know what will have longevity. And how long is it before we consider something a classic?

  6. You did better than I did — I could only think of Jayber Crow!

  7. I haven’t read any of these yet, but if they made it on this list I’ll need to check them out! 🙂

  8. I’ve heard good things about the Vuong book, but I haven’t read it yet. Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier.

  9. I would love to see On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous and Between The World and Me become classics of the future, excellent choices!

  10. Oh, The Snow Child!! I loved that book. Nice work!

  11. I saw Between the World and Me on another list today, and I hope you’re both right! It’s a fabulous book, and I hope it gets read by a lot more people.

  12. I had Between the World and Me on my list too!! It definitely needs to be a classic. Great list!

I’m glad to see the topic I suggested is one you think about often, I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately too. On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is one I need to read!

  14. I’ve read two of these — The Deep and The Snow Child — and I think you’ve made great predictions! I do hope people will still be reading these book many years from now.

  15. I agree that not every best seller is well written. There have been some that others have raved about that I can never get past chapter one. To each their own. I couldn’t even come up with six so I opted for a totally different subject.

  16. I would add Klara and the Sun to that list. Like many novels, it is prophetic!
