Top Ten Tuesday: The First 10 Books I Randomly Grabbed from My Shelf

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

A little red squirrel sitting up and staring at the photographer. This photo was taken outdoors and the leaves are turning yellow for the autumn. The grass is still green.

Not my photo. I simply love squirrels and autumn.

I  am not sure how to write for the introduction to this post this week. Just like all of you, I assume, my TBR list is a long one. Eventually, I hope to read all of these titles.

As usual, this includes a variety of genres. I admire those of you who can stick to one genre all of the time, but I find it more enjoyable to bounce around from one to the next.

1. My Friends by Fredrik Backman

2. Recitatif: A Story by Toni Morrison

3. When the Moon Hits Your Eye by John Scalzi

4. Cemetery Boys (Cemetery Boys, #1) by Aiden Thomas

5. White Light: The Elemental Role of Phosphorus-in Our Cells, in Our Food, and in Our World by Jack Lohmann

6. The Antidote by Karen Russell

7. The Blanket Cats by Kiyoshi Shigematsu, Jesse Kirkwood (Translator)

8. When the Earth Was Green: Plants, Animals, and Evolution’s Greatest Romance by Riley Black

9. Children of Time (Children of Time, #1) by Adrian Tchaikovsky

10. Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1) by Seanan McGuire

  1. I recognize some of these titles and authors but never read any of them! What is fun about these types of lists is the genre variety. 🙂

  2. Ooh nice list! I want to read 3 and 9, and 5 is intriguing too!
    I combined with #scifimonth: https://wordsandpeace.com/2025/11/04/top-ten-scifi-books-my-year-2025-in-science-fiction/

  3. I think Blanket Cats sounds so good!

  4. When the Moon Hits Your Eye is…silly, but fun! Would be a good palate-cleanser if you’ve read something gloomy.

  5. I’m a genre bouncer too! 🙂 I loved My Friends so much (just read it last month), and loved When the Moon Hits Your Eye too. The Wayward Children books (your #10) is a favorite series of mine… and I just started Children of Time last night (after staring at it on my shelf for years — it’s so long!)

  6. If I may, I would recommend When the Moon Hits Your Eye for your next read. It is the perfect distraction from anything real.

  7. I loved Cemetery Boys and have been thinking of doing a re-read at some point. I also really enjoyed Children of Time and I have the next books in the series but I think I’ll need to re-read that one before continuing on. I also finally read my first Backman book last month and now I can’t wait to dive into his backlist and new releases 😍 I hope you enjoy all of these whenever you get to them!

This is the second list I’ve seen Cemetery boys on! That’s funny. Every Heart a Doorway is a good one.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

  9. Cemetery Boys is one I’ve read and loved! I still need to read a Fredrik Backman book, I’ve heard only great things about them.

  10. I haven’t read any of these. They really sound like good books. I hope you enjoy them.

  11. I read Every Heart a Doorway last year and didn’t enjoy it as much as I had hoped. I’m sure it was just me and all of the hype around it.

  12. I like to bounce around between genres, too! Fun list. 😀

  13. Love both Cemetery Boys and Every Heart a Doorway.

  14. Poinsettia

The Blanket Cats sounds interesting! Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you

  15. Cemetery Boys was an unexpected surprise. I also enjoyed My Friends, my first Backman book.

  16. I read my first Toni Morrison last month (The Bluest Eye) and I’m currently reading Beloved. I plan to read my way through all her backlist.

  17. Ive really loved Fredrik Backman in the past, so I keep meaning to find My Friends.

  18. I loved both of the books I’ve read by Backman, so I’ve really been meaning to read more from him. MY FRIENDS is one I definitely want to get to at some point. I have a physical copy on my shelf, so I have NO excuse not to. Ha ha.

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

  19. My Friends is one of my top books this year! I just purchased a copy for each of my friends for their Giftmas gift!

  20. My Friends has been on my TBR list for SO long! I really need to get to that one soon. Love your list, Lydia! Happy Wednesday!

  21. Sometimes I like to binge read series, other times I like to bounce between genres. I love that we can all choose what order we read books in 😉 I hope you enjoy all of these when you do get the time/opportunity to read them!

  22. A fun mix! I also bounce around between genre a lot, it adds a lot of fun to reading.

  23. I just started When The Moon Hits Your Eye fir Sci Fi Month! I’m enjoying it so far. I’m hoping to read When The Earth Was Green sooner rather than later, too.

  24. You’ve got some really great titles on here this week, Lydia. Recitatif was such an intriguing read, and I really loved how Morrison wrote it. When the Earth Was Green also sounds good.
