Top Ten Tuesday: Characters I’d Like to go on Vacation With

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

A pair of sunglasses sitting on a sand dune. The sun is setting in the background. As I’ve mentioned here before, visiting Prince Edward Island is my dream vacation.

My ideal vacation companions are people – or, in this case, characters – who are friendly, flexible, independent, enjoy the simple things in life, and are introverted or introvert-friendly. I’d like to have some time each day for group hangouts, of course, but I’d also want everyone to feel free to take a few hours to do something alone or with just one or two other people whenever needed.

Other than books, of course, I love nature,  food, history, and visiting old cemeteries, so most of the activities I’d suggest would revolve around these topics. Depending on the weather, we might visit the beach, look for interesting epigraphs at the local cemetery, go for a nature walk or hike,  take a tour of a historical site, or ask the locals about their favourite local spots to hang out that tourists might not be aware of and then see if those suggestions were as fantastic as I hope they would be.

If the weather outside were frightful, I’d suggest visiting nearby museums, bookstores, coffee houses, ice cream shops, restaurants, and/or libraries to whomever wished to join me.

Here are some characters I think would enjoy this minimalistic and laid-back vacation style.

1. Frodo Baggins from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy

2. Eleanor Oliphant from Gail Honeyman’s Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

3. Celie from Alice Walker’s The Color Purple

4. Katniss from Suzanne Collin’s The Hunger Games

5. Don from Graeme Simsion’s The Rosie Project

6. Alice from Claire Kann’s Let’s Talk About Love

7. Murderbot from Martha Wells’ All Systems Red

8. Richard from Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere

9. Matilda (as an adult) from Roald Dahl’s Matilda

10. Binti from Nnedi Okorafor’s Binti

  1. Great list! I love your idea of an ideal vacation, and am super jealous because it sounds so perfect! I’m not familiar with all of these characters, but the ones that I do know of seem like they’d fit in perfectly.

Here’s my post for this week: http://leahs-books.com/2024/04/16/ttt-more-jewish-joy/

  2. Frodo and Matilda are great choices!! And that sounds like a perfect vacation. That is usually the type of vacation my husband and I go on, very laid back and full of nature.

  3. Omg, a vacation with Murderbot would be amazing! 😍 But I loved many of the characters that you’ve mentioned too. What a fun vacation this would be. Great picks!

  4. An adult Matilda would be interesting! I brought along Tom Sawyer and Anne of Green Gables, but as as kids. Not sure Tom would be nearly as fun grown up and responsible.

  5. Matilda would make a vacation fun.

  6. Joanne

I’d love to know what Matilda would be like as an adult!

  7. I haven’t met Eleanor, but I know that novel is well loved. And while I didn’t meet her in the books, Matilda seems like she’d be a fun character to meet. 🙂 Thanks so much for visiting my website today.

  8. “Matilda (as an adult)” reminds me that most of my favorite novels are for or about kids! (Imagine a vacation with ten child characters…if they hadn’t grown up and old by now.)

Celie would definitely not be tiresome or clingy, more likely wanting to go off with Shug, but it’s fun to imagine travelling with her now. She never could have imagined! Starting with “No ma’am, please, I WANT you to sit up front with Miss Shug so she can drive.” And “Of COURSE we can all sit at the same tables in the same restaurants and serve ourselves from the same buffets.” And…well, progress is slow, but I *am* finding good books from some parts of Africa now. And cell phones, and the Internet…would she like this century better, or want to go back to hers?

Frodo?! Right. I’ll stop and do my own blog post!

This was fun to read and to react to.

  9. I love this list but I think Murderbot is my favorite! It would be an interesting time for sure!

  10. Yes, vacations with extroverts are EXHAUSTING! I am an introvert, as is everyone in my family, and we enjoy our minimalistic vacations! We see stuff, then recharge before seeing more stuff, LOL!

  11. Matilda will be a fun companion

  12. I like your holiday style!

I’ve only read Matilda and I think that she would be fun.

    Have a great week!

  13. I’d love eating and drinking with a hobbit!

  14. Oooh, Matilda is a great choice! I love Katniss but I’m not sure I’d like her as a travel companion. I’d be too intimidated to enjoy myself maybe? 😅

  15. Frodo would be a great chill vacation companion! Though honestly, I’m not sure Katniss knows how to relax. It could be fun trying to help her learn, though.

    • Oh, I just saw your comment now after commenting on your post. Funny timing there.

Katniss relaxing would be a highlight of the trip if we could get it to happen!

  16. Don from Rosie would be really different!

  17. Murderbot on vacation…I’d kind of love to see that! 😀

  18. Bilbo is such a good pick.

  19. I love the sound of this vacation! Can I tag along, too?

  20. This is so well thought out! I especially liked that you included Adult Matilda on your list. I think she would be a sweet person to get to know.

  21. Some good characters there, Lydia. My favourite of them would be Celie.

Thank you for visiting my TTT about Characters I’d like to go on vacation with.

  22. I love your vacation style! Sounds perfect. PEI has been on my travel bucket list for forever. I have ancestors who lived on Cape Breton Island, so one of these days I’m going to go visit that whole area. It looks so beautiful.

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

  23. I definitely love the sound of your proposed type of vacation, and I can see that Frodo, Katniss and Alice would too!

  24. It makes me very happy to see both Frodo amd Richard on your list!

  25. Great choices! I’d also love to go to PEI someday. I’d be a little afraid of an adult Matilda, but I’d love to hang out with an adult Anne or Emily, and definitely Frodo and Sam!

  26. Oooh, and Katniss could feed you and protect you if any trouble arrises. Great choices!
