Top Ten Tuesday: Holiday Reads

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Ornaments, snow-covered pine cone, tinsel, and a wrapped present. While I don’t really celebrate any winter holidays with anything other than a nice meal, I still enjoy reading books about or set in this part of the year.

1. Yuletide Tales A Festive Collective by Peter John

I’ve never seen such a diverse assortment of stories related to Christmas. The references to the horror genre in the blurb are particularly interesting.

2. The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry

One of my favourite Language Arts teachers assigned this story to us when I was a teenager. I’ve loved it ever since.

3. The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror (Pine Cove, #3) by Christopher Moore

How can anyone read this title and not want to find out what happens next?

4. A Christmas Story by Jean Shepherd

How did I just now find out that this is a novel as well as a classic Christmas movie?

5. Yule: A Celebration of Light and Warmth by Dorothy Morrison

There’s something fascinating to me about learning where the various winter holiday traditions started.

6. The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen

I was obsessed with Mr. Andersen’s stories when I was a child. He was the person who introduced me to many of my favourite classic fairytales and legends!

7. The Cat Who Ate Christmas by Lil Chase

This is another one of those titles that is completely irresistible to me.

  1. I struggled with this week’s prompt. I adore Christmas, but I tend to go in more for movies than books. I have a few books that give me a cosy feeling that I associate with this time of year, but that’s about it! I am trying to find some Christmas books for younger readers to share with my kid, though, and so far that’s fun. This year I got How Winston Delivered Christmas so we can attempt her first chapter book. Not sure what she thinks so far (it’s a chapter a day through to Christmas, so we’re only two chapters in) but I figure it’s one we can read together each year as she gets older and can invest more. Here’s to trying to find some new ones this year!

  2. Great list! The Snow Queen is such a good wintry story, and The Stupidest Angel has a brilliant title – I definitely want to know more!

  3. Who could resist a book called The Cat Who Ate Christmas? Wonderful list. I have actually read The Stupidest Angel and loved it!

  4. Great list. A Christmas story is such a classic! I knew I was forgetting one on my list. The Cat Who Ate Christmas sounds like such a cute and fun read. I totally agree with you on the title, too irresistible not to want to pick up.

  5. Donna van Eck

Ooo i think i know a few of these, love this list.

  6. The Gift of the Magi is such a beautiful story. And A Christmas Story is one of my favorite holiday films. 🙂

  10. Amy

  11. I’ve just taken a notion to read a few holiday books this year. I’ve just found a copy of A Christmas Story and it is on its way to me.

  12. The Cat who ate Christmas, sounds a lot like mine. Thanks for coming by, Lydia. Have a Merry Christmas.

  13. “The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror” is a ridiculous title! But it makes me want to read it haha.

  14. I remember really liking The Snow Queen was I was little – can’t remember anything about it though!

  15. The Cat Who Ate Christmas sounds perfectly charming. I'm adding it to my to-read list! Naughty kitties are just irresistable!

    My TTT

  16. I went more general bc I rarely read holiday anything, but yay to A Christmas Story-on my must read someday–I’ve been to the house/film location, so fun.

  17. Kristi

The Stupidest Angel is definitely an intriguing title!

  18. This week is making me so ashamed I have never read A Christmas Story. :(. Looks like you have some great picks this week Lydia!

  19. I do like books that are set in a holiday type setting at this time of year, there’s something about the festive season that makes it fun to read about too!

  20. Ooh The Snow Queen is a great holiday read.

  21. In some dark recess of my brain I knew A Christmas Story was a book, but only remember whenever someone brings it up. Then I promptly push it back in my brain and forget that I want to read this book!

  22. The Gift of the Magi was one of my favorites in school. I can’t believe I forgot to put that one on my list.

  23. The Christmas Story is so funny. I highly recommend it to anyone who has and has not seen the movie.

  24. I have always wanted to read The Gift of the Magi but haven’t gotten to it. Maybe this year.

  25. Oh my gosh, The Gift of the Magi! I read that, but I never knew what it was called. xD

“The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror” — There is so much to this title that I don’t even know where to start, but it has me aaaaall sorts of curious about it. I’m definitely gonna have to check that series out!

  26. The Stupidest Angel is a fantastic book! It made me smile just seeing it here.

  27. I haven’t read any of these but I’ll check it out! Great list 🙂

  28. Hans Christian Andersen wrote the best stories. There’s a line in Frozen II that I think is funny “I found this new Danish author” or something like that. So funny!

  29. Ahh I love The Cat Who Are Christmas. I’m now kind of wishing I added it to my list!

  30. Oh I 1000% agree on the titles for no 3and 7 — they are impossible to resist! How’d you find them!?

  36. I do want to try The Stupidest Angel. 🙂

  37. The Gift of the Magi is such a great story. One of my favorites.

  38. Definitely adding some of these to my TBR!

  39. As an ex-Catholic I find this is still the epitone of Christmas for me,
    https://www.chesterton.org/a-child-of-the-snows/

Beneath the tacky songs & decorations (which I’ve never liked), it’s about a minor event few noticed at the time, but which transformed the world, which I find beautiful.

  40. Great list! These all sound like such perfect holiday reads 🙂

  41. Great list! The Snow Queen is one I keep meaning to actually sit down and read!

  42. RS

I’m not sure exactly which version of The Snow Queen I read as a kid; I feel like it was probably a retelling, but I do know the Queen made an impression one me because she was genuinely scary, moreso than any Disney villain I’d seen up to that point. I loved it precisely because of that.
