Top Ten Tuesday: Quotes About Reading

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

A tiny green cactus in a tiny white planter that is sitting on a white hardcover book on a wooden table. The original theme for this week was  “Quotes From/About Books,” but I’m tweaking it to be quotes about reading instead.

1. “Books are mirrors: you only see in them what you already have inside you.”
Carlos Ruiz Zafón, The Shadow of the Wind

2. “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.”
Stephen King

3. “She read books as one would breathe air, to fill up and live.”
Annie Dillard, The Living

4. “Only a generation of readers will spawn a generation of writers.”
Steven Spielberg

5. “My alma mater was books, a good library…. I could spend the rest of my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity.”
Malcolm X

6. “Everything in the world exists in order to end up as a book.”
Stéphane Mallarmé

7. “Why can’t people just sit and read books and be nice to each other?”
David Baldacci, The Camel Club

8. “The reading of all good books is like conversation with the finest men of past centuries.”
René Descartes

9. “Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no libraries.”
Anne Herbert

10. “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”
Joseph Addison

    These are all so good

  2. I remember reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X, and in the book he tells about discovering books when he was in prison. If only he had learned about books when he was a child! If only all of us could learn about the wonder of experiencing books as a child.

  3. Great quotes, Lydia! The one from Zafon is also one of my all time favourite quotes, but that one from Annie Dillard also hits hard 🙂

  4. Great quotes. I completely agree with number 7!

    Have a great week!

  5. I have to look up The Camel Cub now!

  6. I love these! The David Baldacci quote is fantastic!

  7. Quotes about books or writing or reading are often good ones! I need to see what I can find because I’m sure I’ll still post this theme too. 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing and for visiting my list today!

  8. Athena @ OneReadingNurse

I never read The Camel Club, maybe it’s time!

  9. Love all of these, especially the Carlos Ruiz Zafón one!

  10. My alma mater was books, a good library…. I could spend the rest of my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity.”

When I was a high school librarian I’d sit at my desk looking out at the library and think a version of this very thought. If only I couldn’t read all these books I would have a world class education.

  15. This is fantastic! “Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no libraries.”
    ― Anne Herbert

    So very true!

  16. Superb choice of quotes. Stephen King–exactly. You learn to write and become a writer first by being a reader.

  17. The one from the Camel Club is what the world needs right now!

Here’s my TTT post for the week: https://readbakecreate.com/the-ts-have-it-ten-titles-starting-with-t/

  18. Such wonderful quotes, Lydia. I almost posted a couple of these. King’s words are the main ones that stuck with me after reading “On Writing.” Baldacci’s quote is great. Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog.

  19. Love that quote about books being mirrors. I do think much of reading is subjective. Not everyone is going to get to same thing out of a book. Thanks for sharing these!

  20. Great quotes! My favorite: “Why can’t people just sit and read books and be nice to each other?”
― David Baldacci, The Camel Club

  21. A wonderful selection, and Baldacci’s question is a great one

    Thanks for sharing your #TTT

  22. Your quotes are so good especially for the costly times we are living in.

My favorite (a little bell went off in my head):

    1. “Books are mirrors: you only see in them what you already have inside you.”
― Carlos Ruiz Zafón, The Shadow of the Wind

makes me wonder why I like apocalyptic stories so much 🫤🤔

  23. Great quotes! And right now, the world really needs more people just sitting and reading books and being nice to each other.
