Top Ten Tuesday: Titles with Things Found in Nature

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Closeup photo of a snail whose shell has a swirl of black, brown, and white on it. The snail is sitting on a large green leaf. This was a cute idea for a theme, Jessica @ a GREAT read.ย

One of the things I like to do when I go out into nature is to keep an eye out for insects, arachnids, and other similar creatures.

Do I touch them? No, never! While the majority of bugs in southern Canada are not dangerous, we do have a few species that could harm a person if you were bitten or stung by them. Luckily, they are shy and so will happily leave humans alone if we leave them alone. (Well, other than the mosquitos).

I have no desire to remove any of these animals from their homes or disturb them from their search for food, water, or shelter. Itโ€™s simply cool to crouch down and see whatโ€™s crawling around in the soil or sand beneath my feet.

My answers for todayโ€™s prompt will include a variety of small animals you might find out in nature.

1. Lord of the Flies by William Golding

2. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest (Millennium, #3) by Stieg Larsson

3.Little Bee by Chris Cleave

4. Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears by Verna Aardema

5. The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey

6. Firefly Summer by Maeve Binchy

7. Two Bad Ants by Chris Van Allburg

8. Caterpillar Summer by Gillian McDunn

9. The Patron Saint of Butterflies by Cecilia Galante

10. Miss Benson’s Beetle by Rachel Joyce

Do you like any of these creatures?

  1. You picked some very fitting titles to feature. I like that you chose titles featuring creatures you find or see in nature. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Love the titles you chose. I read Firefly Summer many years ago and loved it.

  3. Fab list! I love insects and I’m very happy to interact with them outside!

  4. This one was an easy one for science readers!

  5. Having spent most of my life in the desert… I leave the wildlife alone. Too many things that can kill you wandering around these parts. ๐Ÿ˜€ Nice book choices though!

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

  6. Such a fun list, love how you make a theme ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Oooh, great idea! I love bees, fireflies, and butterflies especially, but I do recognize that even the “less appealing” insects have their purpose. I’m a lot more likely to stop and look at a bee than an ant, though. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Here’s my TTT for the week: https://bookwyrmknits.com/2024/02/27/top-ten-tuesday-covers-titles-with-things-found-in-nature/

  8. Joanne

This is fabulous Lydia! I do like some of these creatures but not all. I loved Miss Benson’s Beetle.

Here’s mine for this week: https://portobellobookblog.com/2024/02/27/top-ten-tuesday-27th-february-2024-covers-with-things-found-in-nature-toptentuesday-bookrecommendations-tuesdaybookblog/

  9. Omigosh! I remember Two Bad Ants! I think my teacher read it to my class

  10. I love your choices here! Especially the first three, which I have read.

  11. Such a fun take on the topic, and I love how you even found titles with 10 different animals!

  12. I do love looking at Butterflies ๐Ÿ™‚ Great way to narrow down today’s topic! Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier.

  13. Athena @ OneReadingNurse

Fun take on the topic! I don’t love the creepy crawlers so much ๐Ÿ˜‚

  14. I like your approach to this week’s topic! Those are all new to me, so I’ll have to check them out. My TBR list just keeps growing and growing…. LOL

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  15. Oh, such a brilliant take on the prompt! I’m easily grossed out by bugs too but some of these sound good, and I loved Lord of the Flies.

  16. Great approach to the topic! I really enjoyed Little Bee.

  17. I really want to read Miss Benson’s Beetle! I particularly love watching ants move around on a hot summer day, they are fascinating. Love your snail picture!

  18. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest is brilliant! I love that series so much!! I am normally so grossed out by bugs. haha

  19. What a great sub-theme for this week’s theme! I am not a fan of creepy crawlies, but I am learning about them as I work on my gardening skills so that I can separate friend from foe.
I’ve only read Lord of the Flies (in high school, of course!) and I think I read Firefly Summer, but it’s been so long I’m not actually sure, but I was on a Maeve Binchey tear for awhile.

  20. I love your take on this week’s topic! You shared some great-sounding books. And I’m with you; I would rather leave the animals where they are and look at them.

  21. Deanne Patterson

Your snail.is adorable and love your theme this week. Those titles sound great.

  22. I did a similar twist for my list today. MISS BENSON’S BEETLE is on there. It sounds like a great read!

    Happy TTT!

A cool list here.. and I have only read the first one on this.. though I have a couple others on my TBR..
    My post is here

  24. You definitely took the harder route with animals in the titles – well done!

  25. I like your spin on the theme, I also chose insects to focus on (not sure why because they aren’t my favorite, lol) Nice selection!

  26. That’s a great idea for a list. I like looking at creatures too but no way would I touch them ๐Ÿ˜‚

    Have a great week!

  27. I love this. It’s a great big world out there and I love seeing what kind of creatures we share the earth with.

  28. Ah, interesting choice of theme. ๐Ÿ˜€ Creepy-crawlies can be so fascinating.

  29. What a neat list. My hope is that nature stays outdoors and doesn’t invade my space, so I don’t invade theirs. Thanks for visiting my blog last week.

  30. What a wonderful list, Lydia! While I recognize the importance of diverse insect species, I’m not typically a huge fan of *seeing* them, and definitely not touching them. Unless it’s a butterfly or a ladybug, those I’m cool with. But as far as the books you’ve chosen, this is the second list I’ve seen Miss Benson’s Beetle on, and I had to add it to my TBR now. I also loved The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.

  31. To tell the truth, I only enjoy a few creatures from your list, lol. I have just read book 1. I hate mosquitoes (they love me!), and I have another book on them I want to read (nonfiction)
