Top Ten Tuesday: Quotes About Canada

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Happy Canada Day to everyone observing it today!

A Canada goose sitting in front of a pond looking every bit as grumpy as this species often are. For this week’s freebie/throwback theme, I’m going to share ten quotes about Canada in honour of Canada’s birthday. Many of them are humorous.

I included a photo of a Canada goose in this post because of the old joke that Canadians are so friendly because we channel all of our anger into these beautiful but often grumpy animals.

1. “I get to go to overseas places, like Canada.”
Britney Spears

2. “What part of Canada are you from, honey?”
“THE LEFT PART,” said Jay.”
Adam Rex, Fat Vampire: A Never Coming of Age Story

3. “Every Canadian has a complicated relationship with the United States, whereas Americans think of Canada as the place where the weather comes from.”
Margaret Atwood

4. “We would drive to Canada, where it would probably be legal for us to get married- it was Canada where they let people do whatever they wanted because it was too cold to bother stopping them.”
W. Bruce Cameron, Emory’s Gift

5. “The maple leaf in 1965 was chosen to symbolize our land
Its points are five; like the fingers of a hand”
Mohamad Jebara, The Illustrious Garden

6. “A major principle of Canadian foreign aid has been that where the USA wields its big stick, Canada carries its police baton and offers a carrot.”
Yves Engler, The Black Book of Canadian Foreign Policy

7. “This was Canada after all, where no one was overly impressed by anything.”
Harper Lin, Killer Christmas

8. “Cemeteries are deceptive places. You go there for quiet remembering and find yourself assailed by noisy questions. If Mr. Wong didn’t turn his back on his homeland, if he didn’t forget it or forsake it, what then did he feel about becoming a Canadian citizen? Was it a statement of belonging?”
Susan Crean, Finding Mr. Wong

9. “There is room on this land for all of us and there must also be, after centuries of struggle, room for justice for Indigenous peoples. That is all we ask. And we will settle for nothing less.”
Arthur Manuel, Unsettling Canada: A National Wake-Up Call

10. “I was obligated to be nice. I couldn’t be the one Canadian who ruined the country’s reputation. How could I live with myself if I caused a Yankee to say, “I used to think Canadians were so nice, then I met that asshole, Steve”?”
Steven Barker, Now for the Disappointing Part: A Pseudo-Adult?s Decade of Short-Term Jobs, Long-Term Relationships, and Holding Out for Something Better

  1. I always forget about Britney Spears being one of pop culture’s most iconic names and artists. Seeing her listed here was funny and I don’t think I’ve ever seen that quote from her either.

  2. As an American, I’ve been thinking about Canada more lately than I ever have before.

  3. I would like to see Canada’s prairies & mountains one day!

  4. These are great. Our family is from Canada. Though we were all born here, we still have family in Ottawa. Thanks for sharing, Lydia.

  5. Some of these gave me a good chuckle and honestly, made me want to visit Canada even more! 🤭 Great post and happy birthday, Canada!

  6. Oh my god, lol some of these are so good. The Britney one made me laugh.

  7. Joanne @ Portobello Book Blog

I enjoyed my visit to Montreal a few years ago when my daughter was studying at McGill in Montreal.

  8. This is really fun. Happy Canada Day!

  9. Lol, these were great, thanks for sharing. Happy Canada Day!

  10. These are interesting and entertaining quotes! Happy Canada Day! 🇨🇦

  11. What a great topic and great quotes! Happy Canada Day!

  12. vidya

Great quotes, and as for the last one, I think all the Canadians I know have been nice, so guessing it just comes naturally!

  13. #2 and # 7. This American LOVES your country.

  14. I remember that Britney Spears quote haha. Our Prime Minister of the time also referred to Canada once as “Canadia” after he got his Canada and his Canadian a little mixed up lol. It might not have been so bad if it wasn’t a speech during his first official visit….

  15. Happy Canada Day! My step grandfather was Canadian and lived in B.C. with my American grandmother, so we visited that part of Canada often when I was a kid. (He died when I was a teenager and Grandma moved back to the U.S., ending our Canada trips, sadly.) That’s all I’ve seen of your beautiful country, though. I’m planning a Nova Scotia trip (I have ancestors from there) for next year. I can’t wait 🙂

    Happy TTT!

    • That’s lovely, Susan! As far as I’m concerned, this makes you an honorary Canadian. 🙂

I hope you have a wonderful time in Nova Scotia. I’ve only ever seen photos of it, but it sure looks stunning.

  16. Happy (day after) Canada Day!

I’ve always loved Canada, though my visits are never long enough. I’m envious of my great aunt who emigrated there from the US back before I was born. Mr. Wyrm and I looked into a move to Vancouver in 2020 when the work-from-home trend started, but it didn’t work out (his job wouldn’t allow him to transfer). Alas.

  17. Oh Britney. She’s always been quotable. Thank you for sharing these.

  18. Oh, some really funny quotes there. Thanks for sharing.
And thanks for visiting my post:

  19. We know that not ALL of you are nice. We still appreciate those of you who are nice. Cheers!

Another quibble: in the Blue Ridge Mountains the weather comes from both Canada and the Caribbean. We are where the weather patterns smash into each other. There’s no real way to predict which one will hit us, though every radio and TV station employs someone who tries, for entertainment. All we know is that it’s pretty sure to involve rain, at whatever time is most inconvenient. Our weather is usually inconvenient but almost never deadly, so on the whole most of us are glad to be here. Anyway, no place can get all the blame. 🙂
