An autumn leaf lying on the page of an opened book. The book and a cup of coffee in the background are both sitting on a wooden table. Yes, I changed the topic a little this week because I’m firmly on the side of rereading books.

Rereading books is something I tend to do in spurts. I’ll either do a lot of it or not much at all, and my reasons for doing that are simple.

Reason #1: There’s something deeply comforting about stepping into a story when you already know what’s going to happen to it. This is even more true when life is uncertain or when I’m feeling worried or sad about something.

Reason #2: Sometimes I pick up on things I didn’t remember about the characters or plot before, especially if its been a long time since I read that particular story. It’s such a warm feeling to realize that you either missed out or forgot about a small part of the storyline that makes the whole thing feel even better.

Reason #3: Rereading is like visiting an old friend and reminiscing about the adventures you had years ago. The familiarity of taking that trip down memory lane makes me smile.

  1. I like rereading books too.

  2. Definitely agree with you on all points!!

  3. Yes, yes, YES!! To all your reasons. #same.

  4. I used to not be able to reread books for the longest time now I find myself going back to a few books every year. I understand it now when people say it’s a comfort and I totally agree! Awesome post!

  5. Good writing can be appreciated even when you know where it’s going: there are some authors I re-read just to savor their wordplay!

  6. I agree with all of those. I don’t re- read nearly as much as I used to, but I love a good re- read. You’re right it can be like settling in with an old friend. 🙂

  7. I am firmly on Team Re-read here, and very much in agreement with your reasons.

  8. Yes, absolutely! I agree with all your reasons, but #1 the most. (Actually, given how comforting I find re-reading books, I’m surprised I haven’t been doing more re-reading during this pandemic.)

  9. Yes, all your reasons. I agree!

  10. Very much agreed! I’m relieved to see other rereaders around — for a while I seemed to be surrounded by people who never would!

  11. I agree with all your points, but I really struggle to actually fit rereading into my schedule. I’ve got so many books I want to read, they’re usually shinnyier than a reread. I’ve started a slow reread of Discworld where I do a book every months, those are pure comfort and joy.
