Top Ten Tuesday: Cozy Halloween Reads

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

An empty spider web that has been woven in a wheat field that looks ready to be harvested. There are a few beads of water in the web, and the sky looks overcast and like it might rain again soon. Jana wants us to talk about cozy stories this week.

Given that we’re deep into Halloween season, I want to talk about scary stories that also have cozy elements to them.

Let’s smash those two ideas and see what I can come up with!

1. Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

2. Cackle by Rachel Harrison

3. The Broken Girls by Simone St. James

4. We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

5. The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas

6. A Fever of the Blood (Frey & McGray, #2) by Óscar de Muriel

7. Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker

8. Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell

9. Anya’s Ghost by Vera Brosgol

10. Fangs by Sarah Andersen

11. The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher

If you like these genres, what are some of your favourite dark fantasy or cozy horror reads?

  1. I’ve HEARD of “We Have Always Lived in the Castle”, but never read it. Hope you enjoyed them!

I personally stay away from horror for the most part. Once a year I might get an itch to read Stephen King, say, but that’s it.

  2. Great topic and list! I think I’d have a hard time coming up with cozy spooky books, but having read six of your books, I think you’ve done a great job! The Hollow Places is terrifying! I love We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and so many others on your list.

  3. These all sound like they would be ideal picks for this week’s topic. I’ve heard of Shirley’s book but haven’t ever read it or really read about it either. Based on cover art alone it sure looks like a great spooky read. 🙂 Thanks so much for visiting my list today!

  4. I LOVE Mooncakes and Pumpkinheads so much! I’m keen to read more of Kingfisher’s books as I’ve tried one or two before and while they were creepy, they weren’t too scary for me. I’m hoping the others that I try won’t be as bad either 🤭 Great list!

  5. A great list – I especially like The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas: even the book cover is atmospheric.
