Are we picking real or mythological animals this week, friends? I wish some of you could jump into a Time Machine to tell past me which option is going to be more popular this week.
Since you can’t do that, I’m going to give two answers.
As far as real animals go, rabbits would be my first pick if I wasn’t allergic to them and their hay.
They are quiet and usually pretty small creatures that don’t need to be taken outside for walks like a dog does.
This means that when I’m having a migraine or other health troubles, I could still rest at home and not have to go out into the bright, noisy world.
A pet rabbit would be no bother at all on those days.
I also think they’re absolutely adorable little mammals and would love watching them hop around and play or perhaps take a peaceful nap depending on the time of day.
If we’re strictly speaking of magical friends here, I think Brownies would be a nice household companion. I would happily give them food, respect, and a peaceful home and would appreciate whatever small repairs or improvements they decided to make to my home in exchange.
Ah, I never even considered mythical animals. I’d love a dragon… I did have rabbits when I was a kid. They’re so beautiful but mine were rescues and so skittish that they’d nibble anyone other than me or my dad when they were held.
That’s right, I remember you mentioning your pet rabbits before. A dragon would be really cool.
My family tried to keep rabbits when I was young, but between dogs digging under the fence and the abundance of raptors in my area….I’d have to resort to something like an elevated cage, and I’m not doing that. Never tried one ‘indoors’.
I can’t blame you for that one bit. Poor bunnies.
I went both, too, but my list is a little longer. I actually thought about Dobby the house elf from Harry Potter but wasn’t sure if that was a pet or not.
Cool! I’ll come say hello.
Rabbits are one animal I know I couldn’t keep, but they can be lovable. A Brownie? Might be more doable than most people think. Apparently there were several different breeds, but they were all described like furtive, unkempt, usually “old” men who didn’t want to be seen, talked to, or even given new clothes (however ragged their own clothes became). Homeless men could be harshly punished for begging or stealing. When work was hard to find, especially when homelessness resulted from policy decisions, Brownies, Hobs, Seelie Wights, etc., seem to have flourished. I wouldn’t mind having one either!
Thank you for sharing those details. How interesting.
