Top Ten Tuesday: Pets Are Family, Too

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Since I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, it’s always interesting to see what I can come up with that fits this theme for Top Ten Tuesday.  My previous posts have included Romantic Quotes, Conversation Hearts, Helpful Nonfiction Books About Relationships, Asexual Characters, Platonic Relationships, and Chocolate.

I’m not feeling particularly creative this year, so I’m going to keep it simple and share ten quotes about the joys of having a pet. If platonic love can also be celebrated among friends and family for Valentine’s Day, I’d argue that pets should be included as well.

If not for my allergies, I’d want to have a couple of pet rabbits hopping around my apartment!

Two baby bunnies eating a row of daisies that have been picked and placed in front of them. Behind the rabbits you see a large expanse of short grass.1. “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”
Anatole France

2. “My philosophy when it came to pets was much like that of having children: You got what you got, and you loved them unconditionally regardless of whatever their personalities or flaws turned out to be. ”
Gwen Cooper, Homer’s Odyssey

3. “Perhaps the greatest gift an animal has to offer is a permanent reminder of who we really are.”
Nick Trout, Love Is the Best Medicine: What Two Dogs Taught One Veterinarian about Hope, Humility, and Everyday Miracles

4. “Anyone who thinks money can’t buy happiness has never owned a cat [or any pet].”
Arya Riverdale

5. “Our pets are our family.”
Ana Monnar

6. Dogs teach us the true meaning of unconditional love and loyalty. In their eyes, we find a reflection of our best selves.”
Uma Sajit

7. “Our pet are our babies. We’re not rational about them. Feathers or furs or scales, they’re the center of entire worlds.”
Nicole Snow, No Good Doctor

8.“Some things about being human can’t be learned from your own kind..”
Rona Maynard, Starter Dog: My Path to Joy, Belonging and Loving This World

9. “A pet and a book and a bar of chocolate – what more could one want?”
Michelle Granas, Amadea: One Spring in France

10. “We are very fond of books. You can learn nearly everything from them that rabbits can’t teach you.”
Alan Snow, Here Be Monsters! (1)

Happy Valentine’s Day to those who celebrate it! If you have a cute story about your pet(s), I’d love to hear it.

  1. My aunt recently got a kitten and he’s the cutest thing ever. 🙂

  2. I still miss my childhood pets. I’d love to have a cat, my husband not so much.
    Thanks for sharing your #TTT

  3. My husband and I usually just go out to dinner or something. Neither of us are big on celebrating Valentine’s Day, but it does fall right around our halfiversary (e.g. we will have been married two and a half years on February 12), so that’s kind of fun.

I love these quotes and I’m totally with you on the rabbits!

  4. I *LOVE* that you went for pets! I’ve got a cat nursing an injured leg at the moment, and it really hammers home how important they are.

  5. Great idea for your post this week! Pets definitely are family. We have a cat named Salem and my brother and his girlfriend have two cats(Gabbi and Bubba), we love them all.

Thanks for visiting my post earlier. Have a great rest of your week.

  6. Love your twist on the topic today – pets are family!

  7. I don’t celebrate Valentine’s either but I do use it as a guilt-free excuse to treat myself to something nice (usually a book, lol)! 🤭 I love all of these quotes. My pets are my babies and they are family and I always include them when celebrating what I love. Great post, Lydia!

  8. Reminds me of a quote….”Lord, help me be the person my dog thinks I am!”

  9. They are great quotes!

    Have a great week!

  10. Great topic! I have three cats and they fill the house with so much love and life.

  11. Wonderful post and completely agree that pets are family too!

  12. A lovely post reminding us how wonderful pets can be. My daughter keeps asking, and I’m so close to saying yes. But between her allergies and my husband’s, I don’t think it’s really fair to anyone to have a pet.

  13. Pets can be fun I just have no desire to take care of anything else in this stage of life. I hate to say it like that, but it’s so true, LOL! I am allergic to cats, which would be easier to care for than dogs. Sorry you can’t have bunnies because of your allergies.

  14. Hurray for pets! Pets bring love to so many.

  15. I don’t have a pet anymore due to my traveling, but I loved everyone of the 5 dogs I had in my lifetime. I love these quotes and I think #9 is my favourite.

  16. Such fun quotes! I love this idea. 😀

  17. Very sweet! I like other people’s pets, but I don’t want to own any animals of my own. Too much responsibility. My granddog and my neighbor’s dog come to visit quite regularly and that’s enough for me 😉

    Happy TTT!

  18. Great spin on the topic! Those allergies are really relatable.

  19. I have four pets and can’t imagine not having any ever again. It’s a special kind of feeling to be so unconditionally valued. Except when you are trying to pee and your cat is trying to dig their way into the bathroom.

  20. I love it! I had a pet rabbit once. We got him a couple months after Easter because someone in the neighborhood decided the “itty bitty Easter bunny” grew too large and they released it in the neighborhood. We were really nervous when we found him hopping around outside. We never did find the original owner, but it meant that I got a cute bunny friend!

  21. These are great quotes. I miss having a house full of pets. 🙂

  22. What a great idea for a “love” themed post. I love all these quotes and I totally agree:-)

  23. I love these quotes – as my dog snoozes beside me.

  24. I absolutely love these and agree with them all! I love my fur babies!!

  25. Ahh, that bunny pic is cute (and at such an opportune moment: that daisy’s going down the endless maw in the next second, in my experience). Good quotes!

  26. This is great! I and my two kids are allergic. I wish we could have a pet, but we are just a fish family. lol

  27. We currently have three cats and my husband, who wasn’t sure about a cat, probably spoils them all the most!

  28. Hey Lydia, I have a little Tuxedo cat called Sox, although no snuggling while I read, she is more likely to try to get in-between me and the book for fusses 😸 Blessings, Jessica 💌

  29. Such great quotes, Lydia. Our pets are certainly part of our family.
