Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl
I’d never heard of a book hangover until Jana mentioned them in this week’s prompt.
Most of the strong attachments I formed to books happened when I was a child or teenager. It was fairly rare for them between that point in time and my current age until pretty recently for reasons I haven’t figured out yet.
So this list is a short one, but a few years ago it wouldn’t have existed at all. The links in this post will go to my reviews of these books.
1) The Deep by Rivers Solomon
The imagery in this book was so strong that reading it made me feel as if a movie were playing out in my mind. I sure hope this gets made into a film or TV show someday. We’re overdue for an aquatic show, especially one that tackles as many important themes as this one does.
2) Patient Zero by Terry Tyler
There’s something about reading about pandemics that comforts me every flu season. I still need to read the rest of this series, but, wow, was this a good introduction to this universe! Jumping around among so many different characters really drew me into this world.
3) The Testaments by Margaret Atwood
I’ve been a huge fan of The Handmaid’s Tale for many years now. It was immensely satisfying to finally get a sequel to it. I can’t wait to see how the updates on so many characters from the first book are integrated into the TV show based on this series, too.

Great list! One of these days I need to read The Handmaid’s Tale, and I’d really like to try The Deep, too.
I hope you enjoy them! And thanks.
It took me a little while to remember the last few reads that gave me a hangover and it made me realise that I actually don’t get them that often (thank goodness too)! Haha I’m really keen to read The Testaments and also trying Solomons’ books. I’ve heard lots of good things! Great list, Lydia 🙂
Thank you very much!
I have big interest to Margaret Atwood’s work. Hope it would be on my currently reading shelf soon 🙂
Oh, it was fantastic. Enjoy!
I definitely had a book hangover after reading The Testaments, too! It was such an excellent book!
The Deep sounds really good, I hopped over and read your review. Short, but good list Lydia.
Thank you very much! Yeah, it was a great read.
I’ve seen The Deep around a good bit recently. I’ve been tempted to try it. 🙂
I hope you will!
I found this prompt difficult until I separated the two definitions which I found was much more easy to pick examples then!
I really need to get round to reading the testaments!!
That makes sense. Hope you like The Testaments.
I’d never heard of a book hangover until this week either, so don’t feel alone.
I often suffer from this phenomenon, but I try to quickly recover with a new book.
Thanks. I’m glad you were in the same boat.
Yeah, I don’t really get book hangovers either. There are definitely books I found super immersive and memorable, but that didn’t stop me from moving right on to the next one. LOL.
Heh, it sounds like we’re generally in the same boat then. Happy TTT!
I think the older we get the harder it is to be wowed and left with a book hangover. For me, a book has to hit me some way emotionally to do so.
I think you’re right about that.
Patient Zero sounds interesting! Especially with the CoronaVirus going around.
Yes, for sure. There are definitely parallels between the two.
I agree absolutely about The Deep. It was so beautiful and unusual. And I agree as well about The Testaments. It’ll be interesting to see if any of these story elements get included in the TV series.
Here’s hoping they will be! 🙂
Mince list! I feel sorry for the next book I read after a hangover book! I’m sure the star rating is affected!
Heh, same here.
Great list. Got The Testaments for Xmas – must read it.
Thanks. I hope you like it!
I still need to read The Testaments.
I liked The Testaments too – it was very different in tone to the Handmaid’s Tale but as you say, very satisfying! Great list! 😊
Thank you very much.
Ohh, I really need to read The Handmaid’s Tale! I really liked the show. Although, I’m super behind on that too! lol
Yes, you really should. I highly recommend it.
Those are new to me ones!
Thanks for visiting my TTT post!
The Deep sounds really interesting, I love when a book is so vivid in your head that it feels like a tv show!
Yeah, it was incredible. I highly recommend it.
The Deep has me super curious, and yes from what I’ve seen it looks like it could be a fabulous show as well!
I’m so glad to hear that Atwood’s sequel is good!
I’m so glad to hear that you loved The Testaments. I’ve yet to read it myself but I’ve been so nervous it wouldn’t live up to the original!
Thank you very much. Yes, I thought it lived up to the original quite well!
I still need to read The Testaments!
I hope you like it!
There is definitely something about the way books stick with you and speak to you when you’re an adolescent. I can somehow remember some books in detail that I read 30 years ago.
Yes, there sure is.
Glad you enjoyed those books, thanks for coming by.
I have only heard of The Testaments from your list, but not read it. I wasn’t a huge fan of The Handmaid’s Tale.
In that case, The Testaments may not be the book for you. 🙂
Great list! I’ve had The Handmaid’s Tale on my shelf forever and I still haven’t read it. I need to though, because the TV show is amazing!
Thank you. I hope you like it when you read it!
The Deep is on my TBR, and I’ve heard really good things about it! I’d love them to make a show of it. How neat would that be? AND they should totally have Daveed Diggs in it.
Yes, it definitely should have Daveed Diggs in it.
I’ve really enjoyed watching ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ tv show, but never got around to the book(s)!
I think you’d love the books!
I’ve been very intrigued by The Deep! And I enjoyed The Handmaid’s Tale, but I was nervous about The Testaments. I’m happy to see that most people liked it. I need to pick it up soon. 🙂
I hope you like them both.
Reading about pandemics would throw me into a stare of paranoia.
Heh, I can’t blame you for that.
I like what you said about The deep — I love it when an author’s mastery of imagery makes me feel like I’m watching (or should be watching) a movie!
Thank you. Yeah, that book was incredible at creating that feeling.
I have not read any of these and have been planning to read Atwood for a long time now…
I hope you enjoy her work! She’s written some great stuff.
I really need to read the Margaret Atwood books, ASAP.
I hope you do! They’re great.
You are possibly the first person to use “comforting” and “pandemic” in the same sentence, but I’m not one to talk — I invariably watch “Twister” during peak tornado season.
LOL, you’re probably right about that.
And watching “Twister” during tornado season does sound fun. Haha.
I think you’ve convinced me to read The Deep. I’m a little nervous bc it isn’t my usual style, but an aquatic world with excellent imagery will be an interesting shot in the reading arm.
I stopped the Hulu adaptation at Season 2 ep. 1 bc Offred was “free” and I didn’t want to return to that oppressive world. If they pick up Aunt Lydia’s story in future seasons, I may pick it back up.
I hope you enjoy The Deep!
And, yeah, I hear you about the oppressive feeling of The Handmaid’s Tale. I’m still trying to decide if I’ll watch this next season.
I completely understand The Deep being a Book Hangover Book. It was written beautifully and it was an emotional read.
I’m glad you get it. 🙂
Ohh, I really need to read The Deep. I’ve been meaning to for months!
It was fabulous. Happy reading!
I really need to get around to reading The Testaments. I have a copy on my TBR pile and I’ve been watching the Handmaid’s Tale tv series so I’m interested to see what’s going to happen next.
I hope you find time for it soon!
The Testaments definitely got to me too. I’m glad it was such a worthy follow up to such a seminal book!
The Handmaid’s Tale was a definite book hangover for me so I have a feeling The Testaments will be the same.
I hope you love it.
I can’t wait to read The Testaments! I’m glad to hear that it was worth reading.
Oh, it was fabulous. Happy reading!
I keep meaning to read The Handmaid’s Tale before watching the show, but I keep forgetting too haha. I’m glad you enjoyed the Testament though.
Thanks a lot. Yeah, it’s definitely something to read after you’re totally familiar with The Handmaid’s Tale.
I need to look into The Testaments! It looks really good! 🙂
