This will be a longer list, but most of the books on it are older. I have not had as much luck seeing more recent favourites on the small screen or the big screen, but I hope that will change now that the writer’s strike has been over for a while.
Books into films:
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
The Color Purple by Alice Walker
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
Matilda by Roald Dahl
The Martian by Andy Weir
The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X
Room by Emma Donoghue
The Cider House Rules by John Irving
Books into TV shows:
The Handmaid’s Tale (The Handmaid’s Tale, #1) by Margaret Atwood (And they’re making a tv show based on the sequel, The Testaments, too!)
Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett
The Magicians (The Magicians, #1) by Lev Grossman
The Mist by Stephen King
The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill
The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick
Oof, I forgot Matilda. Such a fun movie — my intro to Danny DeVito and Mara Wilson, I’m sure. I always appreciated how Wilson stepped back from acting to focus on something she loved — writing!
I’m happy for her!
Yeah, that was my introduction to Danny DeVito and Mara Wilson, too.
I love Matilda. I completely forgot about the Magicians! Such a great series (books and TV)
Agreed.
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and The Man in the High Castle are excellent choices, Lydia. So many great books to the big and small screen. Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome!
The Princess Bride is one of my top 3 movies! Also, I need to watch The Man in the High Castle, I do enjoy Philip K. Dick.
Here is my post.
I hope you love it. It’s very dark at times due to Germany winning that war but such great character and plot development.
OMG how did I forget Good Omens when putting my list together? I have SO MUCH LOVE for that show.
Isn’t it amazing?
This is a tricky one for me. In general, I dislike movie/tv adaptations of favorite books. The Martian is one that I liked more than the book (which I couldn’t get into enough to pass the second chapter) and A Man Called Otto is one I liked (almost) as well as the book. The Princess Bride is a great pick, too. It has such excellent casting!
Fun post, Lydia!

That’s very interesting, Susan! Yeah, I preferred the film version of The Martian, too.
Oh my gosh Lydia. I couldn’t think of a thing, and you’ve even come up with ones I’ve read and seen. Thanks so much for the ideas.
Yay! And you’re welcome.
I always really liked ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.’ I read the book first and then went to see the film, and seem to remember thinking that first movie was pretty as as an adaptation. 🙂
It was done well for sure! I can’t wait for the Netflix series.
