The Sesame Street logo. It looks like a street sign with the numbers 123 at the top and the phrase “Sesame Street” written in a plain white font against a green and gold background. Oh, this is an easy one: Sesame Street.

My grandparents’ live out in the countryside. They used an antenna on their old TV to get a few basic channel back in the day and probably still do.

Depending on what age I was and where we lived, my parents either didn’t have a TV at all or did the same thing as far as not paying for cable goes for most of my childhood. We generally didn’t get to see much current stuff unless they were on PBS or other public channels. It was a lot of news, Jeopardy, and reruns of older movies or shows instead.

Luckily, Sesame Street was available when I was in the right age groups to watch it.

(The Internet was not even something on our radars back then, and what did exist of it back in those days was nothing at all like what we have today).

I have fond memories of the songs and skits they included on that show. See also: “Sunny days, chasing the clouds away.”

My favourite scenes were the ones that showed other children running around and playing outside on playgrounds or other fun places. I also enjoyed how grumpy Oscar the Grouch was and wished I could climb into his trash can and find out why he liked it so much.

  1. I remember when my brother watched Sesame Street. He was enchanted.

I missed Sesame Street; I was too old for it. I was of the Captain Kangaroo generation.

  2. Oh, I loved Sesame Street! I can remember being riveted to the spot watching those characters! You’ve just unlocked some great memories! 😊

  3. My mother thought I ought to be too old for Sesame Street. “Mrs Moose” the teacher didn’t think eight was too old for it! I liked Mrs Moose!

(She wasn’t all that big; most teachers’ nicknames just sounded like their names in some way. She was one of the younger teachers. I’ve not stayed in touch but she could still be alive.)

Anyway it was a great show, at first. I had an Official Sesame Street Songbook with “Sunny Day” and “Up and Down” and “AB-C-DEF-GHI-JKL-M-NOP-QR=STU-VWXYZ” and all. Still have it somewhere.

  4. Thanks for coming by! I’m also a little too old for Sesame Street (I was a freshman in high school when it came out), but I enjoyed watching it with my kids before it went off the air. But, I loved Captain Kangaroo and there was a local kids show… Captain Mercury.

  5. So great to see that we made the same choice this week, Lydia. My girls never watched Sesame Street, but my son did when Elmo was on in the late 80s. Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog.

  6. Like others said above, I was more of a Captain Kangaroo kid, but when I was studying Spanish in college, I’d come home from class and put on one of the Spanish broadcast channels we got (which was a lot, considering where I am). I got home right as Sesame Street started broadcasting.

    Here is my post.

  7. I don’t think I ever saw Sesame Street when I was a kid, though I did catch an episode or two of Mr. Rogers.

  8. I was a bit too old to get into Sesame Street when it first started. I was more of a 60 Minutes kind of gal. lol

  9. I loved watching Sesame Street as a little kid. Big Bird and Elmo were my favorites.
