Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Romantic Quotes

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

This week’s prompt is a love freebie, so I decided to share some romantic quotes for it since this isn’t actually a holiday I observe.

How many of the other Top Ten Tuesday participants live in countries where candy conversation hearts are sold at this time of the year?  I enjoy them, but I haven’t seen them around much the last couple of years. Here’s hoping that changes soon.

If you celebrate Valentine’s Day and have a different favourite candy from it, I’d like to know about that, too!

1. “The very essence of romance is uncertainty.”
Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest and Other Plays

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King

3. “Come sleep with me: We won’t make Love, Love will make us.”
Julio Cortázar

4. “It’s bullshit to think of friendship and romance as being different. They’re not. They’re just variations of the same love. Variations of the same desire to be close.”
Rachel Cohn, Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List

5. “your hand
touching mine.
this is how
galaxies
collide.”
Sanober Khan

6. “Love is too precious to be ashamed of.”
Laurell K. Hamilton, A Stroke of Midnight

7. “Before I fell
in love with words,
with setting skies
and singing birds—
it was you I fell
in love with first.”
Lang Leav, Love & Misadventure

a hot chocolate topped with whipped cream sitting in a pink, polka dotted mug. There are two heart-shaped cookies sitting on a doily next to the mug. 8. “Love, like everything else in life, should be a discovery, an adventure, and like most adventures, you don’t know you’re having one until you’re right in the middle of it.”
E.A. Bucchianeri, Brushstrokes of a Gadfly,

9. “It is impossible to manufacture or imitate love.”
J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

10. “Giving generously in romantic relationships, and in all other bonds, means recognizing when the other person needs our attention. Attention is an important resource.”
Bell Hooks, All About Love: New Visions

  1. Great list! I love that quote from The Return of the King – one of these days I need to read some Tolkien.

  4. Great posts. I have fallen in love with the Gummy Hearts I found at my local CVS store. I better stock up before the holiday is over!

  5. I love your post this week! I still need to read The Return of the King, and your quote made me want to pick it back up. Such beautiful words!

  6. I love quotes! Thanks for sharing! 😍🙌

  7. I don’t celebrate V-Day either. I’ve never been a fan of the forced fakeness of it. I love your choice for this week’s freebie. These quotes really move me.

  8. I love all the quote posts today! There are some great ones here!

I do know that the candy hearts weren’t sold last year because the company had shut down for several months until a new buyer was found. They didn’t have time to produce them for valentines day. I’m pretty sure they should be out this year! I normally see them at all my local grocery stores.

  9. This was a great topic for this week.

One of my favorites comes from The Princess Bride. “This is true love. You think this happens every day?”

  10. Great quotes! I’m not a huge fan of the traditional conversation hearts, but this year I found some SweeTARTS conversation hearts and I LOVE those!

  11. Prachi

Ohhh those quotes made me swoon!! I especially loved the 4th one from the no kiss list.. that’s so true I guess😊

  12. A lovely selection of quotes!

  13. Great quotes! I especially love the Return of the King.

And I heard the conversation heart company was sold last year and there wasn’t time to produce enough, which is why they were missing last year. However after some searching it sounds like they were having issues with production this year as well: https://triblive.com/lifestyles/more-lifestyles/at-a-loss-for-words-conversations-missing-from-some-sweethearts-candy/

  14. Great quotes! I’m not celebrating this year because I’m single, but I do work with kids so I’ll wear some pink or red for them, haha.

  15. Great quotes, I love the Lord of the Rings one 🙂

  16. Amy

I love this list of beautiful quotes!

Candy conversation hearts or ‘love hearts’ are sold year-round here but I do think they bring special ones out for Valentine’s Day. They’re super cute but I definitely prefer chocolate.

  17. Great List! I love that you included a play.

  18. And I see Love & Misadventures there.
At least we have the same book but different list😂

  19. Great quotes. I have to read The Lord of the Rings again someday.

  20. I love the Rachel Cohn quote! Also, not a lot of candy conversation hearts around here, which is a pity indeed.

  21. I love this list of quotes! I especially love the one by Sanober Khan. I’ve never read that quote before, but it’s beautiful.

  22. I love these quotes. I’m celebrating with some chocolate cake and a horror movie, lol.

  23. They’re called Love Hearts here, but I haven’t had them in years!

  24. I love your LOVE quotes! What a great idea. 😀

  25. These are all so great! I love them!

  26. Nice topic choice! Great quotes too by the way. All from new to me reads as well. Lol.

    Thanks for visiting my TTT!

  27. Love the Tolkien one, and the Lang Leav one as well. Great picks. 🙂

  28. What lovely quotes! Yes, I have such distinct memories tied to those candy hearts.

  29. I LOVE that moment from The Return of the King. Eowyn and Faramir are my favorite LOTR couple!

  30. Conversation hearts are fun, but I don’t know of anyone who actually likes to eat them! Personally, I’m all about the chocolate. Forget flowers and love poems, give me the good stuff 🙂

I love all these quotes. The Bell Hooks one is especially true, I’ve found.

    Happy TTT!

  31. Hooo that Julio Cortázar is steamy. Is it hot in here, or is it just me? xD This is a fantastic selection of quotes. They’re all so beautiful!

  32. I love bookish quotes and wish I kept better track of the good ones from books I’ve read. Cool list!!

  33. I love the candy hearts!! Yum. These are all terrific quotes — I especially love the LOTR quote, and I’m excited to see the Naomi & Ely quote too. I loved that book!

  34. Nice quotes, I like your take on this week’s topic!

  35. Ash

I don’t generally like Valentine’s Day. I feel that my husband should spoil me at random and not just because a holiday says to. So we usually don’t do anything except make dinner at home and watch a movie or play video games together.
These quotes are absolutely beautiful though.

    Ash @ JennReneeRead

  36. Great list! Those are great quotes about love! <3

  37. I don’t think that we can get those heart lollies here anymore. I could be wrong.

Loved the quotes. Thank you for sharing.

  38. Great list, I really like this take on the topic 🙂

  39. tonyalee

Ah, I love this! Sharing quotes was an awesome topic for this week.

    Have a great Valentine’s Day!

  40. Your take on this week’s TTT is awesome! It’s been cool seeing what people did with the freebie.

Btw, I love the Tolkien quote.

  41. All so beautiful and different. I am drawn to the power of this Emily Dickinson quote as of late:

If I can stop one heart from breaking
I shall not live in vain.

  42. Swooning over your topic choice this week and these quotes. Great picks!

  43. Awww these are some beautiful lines! I love that you chose to focus on quotes for this list. Hope you have a great Valentine’s Day!

  44. These are all great. I especially like the one from Brushstrokes of a Gadfly.

  45. Sarah C Houser

Great quotes! Is A Stroke of Midnight one of the Merry Gentry novels? I know I’ve read it I just can’t remember which book it is.

  46. I haven’t read the books that some quotes are from and now I added them on my TBR.

  47. I haven’t read anything by him, but I adore “An Ideal Husband” and “The Importance of Being Earnest” as movies. Both are so romantic, so I love that you included a quote from the latter. 🙂

  48. I love that E.A. Bucchianeri quote, it’s so true!

  49. I love that you chose quotes! Great post!

  50. Oh I love the quote idea! I think my favorite on here is the one from Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List. It speaks so much truth.

As far as Valentine’s sweets, candy hearts are pretty popular around where I live still. I’ve never liked them much myself though. While I’m not huge on specific sweets around this time of year (nor the holiday itself), I do love dark chocolate and enjoy being able to get it cheaper the day afterwards.

  51. aaa this was so sweet to read!!!

  52. Every year my hubby and I grouch about Valentine’s Day being a “Hallmark Holiday” created to sell cards. It’s become such a retail holiday. We say we are going to ignore it. And then – I succumb to the social pressure every stinkin’ year. We do something very small for each other and fix a nice dinner and stay at home. Quality time being the real treat. I enjoyed your take on the Love Freebie prompt. Quotes are so fun! Thanks for sharing some good ones!

  53. What lovely quotes!! The Half Blood Prince one is one of my absolute favorites too! <3
