Top Ten Tuesday: Nonfiction Books on My TBR List

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

A beige agaric mushroom growing in a lush patch of grass.I am grateful for all of the Top Ten Tuesday participants who blog about nonfiction and enjoy talking about it. One of my quiet hopes for the future for this blog hop is that we’ll get even more nonfiction readers to join in on the fun.

With those thoughts in mind, here are eleven nonfiction books on my TBR list that I’m excited to read.

1. Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot by Mikki Kendall

2. I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying by Youngmi Mayer

3. The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer, John Burgoyne

4. Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses by Robin Wall Kimmerer

5. Elephants in the Hourglass: A Journey of Reckoning and Hope Along the Himalaya by Kim Frank

6. How to Be Resilient: Simple Steps to Embrace a Positive Mindset and Build Inner Strength by Gail Gazelle MD

7. Happy to Help: Adventures of a People Pleaser by Amy Wilson

8. The Meteorites: Encounters with Outer Space and Deep Time by Helen Gordon

9. Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Pérez

10. How to Share an Egg: A True Story of Hunger, Love, and Plenty by Bonny Reichert

Which genres, if any, do you wish you saw represented more often in TTT posts?

  1. While I know there are great nonfiction titles in the world, I think I could count on one hand the titles I’ve read that one could find in the nonfiction bookstore section. Maybe someday I’ll read more of them. 🙂

  2. I love seeing all the nonfiction books on your list. I haven’t read the two books by Kimmerer, but I loved Braiding Sweetgrass. There’s another Lydia Kang book that I read about illness and it was fantastic!

  3. Count me in! I’m an avid nonfiction reader. I greatly enjoyed the work of Robin Wall Kimmerer. I haven’t read anything else on your list, but I look forward to seeing what you think of these once you have read them.

  4. You always remind me that I need to do a better job of reading nonfiction! 🙂 It’s easy to get caught up in the fiction world, but I love seeing more people exploring a passion for nonfiction. Pseudoscience sounds like a really interesting read!

  5. I’m not so much a NF reader, but Invisible Women sound like it’d be interesting.

  6. I’ve heard of these, but I do enjoy a good memoir, especially if it involves travel.

  7. Poinsettia

I have actually read more nonfiction this past Summer than I usually do. I recently read a very entertaining nonfiction book called The Mystery of the Exploding Teeth and Other Curiosities from the History of Medicine by Thomas Morris. Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

  8. The Psuedoscience one is on my TBR list! Big nonfiction reader here, as you know, but I looked at SF this week.

  9. Elephants in the Hourglass and The Meteorites are the two on your list that I would probably really like. I’ve been trying to read more nonfiction this year and just finished Ann Hood’s memoir Fly Girl. 😀

  10. I need some nonfiction inspiration for nonficnov! The book about resilience sounds good!

  11. Love the list! The only one I read is Hood Feminism, but I’m definitely interested in the others on the list.

  12. I go through nonfiction phases but I haven’t been in one in a very long time. If you ever see pictures of my bookshelves, you’ll see doors on the bottom- the nonfiction is behind those doors. When I do read nonfiction, numbers 6 and 7 are the type of books I read.

  13. I am always happy to get a few nonfiction ideas/recommendations. I’ve heard good things about Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men. Hope you enjoy all of these.

  14. Gathering Moss and The Serviceberry have been on my TBR list too ever since I finished Braiding Sweetgrass last November. I want to read Invisible Women, too.

I agree that nonfiction isn’t generally well represented on TTT posts. I try to mix up my genres to show a little bit of everything that I read—which includes NF—but I do tend to read more fiction than non, so that’s what gets shown more often on my blog.

  15. I’m not a big nonfiction reader, but there have been a couple of memoirs that got my attention. I hope you enjoy your books.

  16. Invisible Women is very, very interesting. I’ll look into a few of these.

  17. So many of these sound amazing, Lydia. I need to add a few to my wish list. Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog.

  18. Oh, these look really interesting! I’ve read Invisible Women, and Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, but not Gathering Moss yet. I’ll have to look at the other ones too!

  19. I’m really not much of a non-fiction reader, but I do enjoy learning about the options out there, and every once in a while actually track down one of the books I see mentioned!

  20. I do read and enjoy nonfiction, but have not heard of any of these. I NEVER think to do a nonfiction post, and I have no idea why.

  21. I hope you enjoy reading all of these when you get the opportunity! While I have a post today that focuses on nonfiction, it’s not my go-to genre. I’m more likely to stumble across a book about a topic I enjoy or am curious about. Occasionally, I’ll pick one up because of the hype (Kate Moore, especially).

  22. I haven’t read any of these, but the titles certainly sound interesting. I have a lot of nonfiction on my list as well.

  23. Your #11 sounds interesting! Curious about that one.

I do like seeing other people writing about non-fiction. More talk about books in translation could be interesting, too.

  24. I haven’t read any of these but I have read Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. I do like a good nonfiction to break things up every once in a while.

  25. Ooh, I’ll have to check out The Meteorites! That sounds pretty good. 🙂

  26. I like history, but can’t believe anyone would publish a title like “How to Be Resilient.”

  27. I actually have a couple of these on my TBR! I did read Hood Feminism! Happy to Help is one that I should probably read. lol

  28. Pseudoscience looks like it would be an interesting read for sure!

  29. Hood Feminism and Invisible Women are on my TBR and even though I’m not much of a non-fiction reader, I’m really looking forward to giving them a try! Elephants in the Hourglass also sounds really interesting. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it. Great list!

  30. These all sound very interesting. Most of the non-fiction books I read are diet related and cookbooks. Have a great week!
